Among the increasing anti -Semitism, people are turning into cordial stories to find light in the dark

“Starting a new life.”

Only six words made an influence on Lily Ebert in 1945, a year after she and her family were forced to leave Hungary and were sent to the infamous Auschvic-Birkenau death camp, where her mother, younger sister, and over 100 of its members lasted the family was killed in the gas rooms.

Ebert and her two sisters were chosen to work for the Nazis until they were “more useful,” Grandson told her, 21, the post recently told The Post.

In April 1945, Ebert and her sisters were in a “March of death” when American-Jewish forces liberated them.

One of these soldiers gave Ebert a banknote with a hopeful message: “Starting a new life. Good luck and happiness. ”

Now, its history and memories are among the highly the honored in the new book of Nikki Schreiber “The People of Judaism”, a collection of over 200 moving stories of Jewish identity and perseverance, including those of the survivors of the Holocaust, artists, inventions, founders, celebrities and personal family stories.

And, at a time of increasing anti -Semitism, people are turning into cordial stories like these to find light in the dark.

“Lily Ebert really was personal to me,” Schreiber shared with the post. “It’s a difficult reality, but the treasure and we hope that the comfort of the family surviving is to see that there are different shops that offer to further the heritage. I hope it’s something significant.”

For Forman, having Ebert’s history to live through the heart book “means a lot.”

“For the world, it was this heroine, an inspiration. She was a hero for so much. For me, she was only my grandmother and for our family she was only that always present queen of our big, dear family, “shared forman.

A ‘incredible’ reunion

Seventy-six years after Ebert was rescued, Forman posted a photo of banknotes on X (then Twitter) during the Covid-19 pandemia, and thanks to the power of social media, she was able to connect with the children of the deceased of the soldier in a call Video in 2020.

“It is incredible. I never knew something like that could happen. It was a fantastic feeling, ”Ebert NBC told at the time.

“It was really special. He felt like we were a family, we just clicked, “Forman added.

From there, Ebert and Forman devoted their presence on the Internet to Education of the Holocaust, and with over a billion views on all platforms and 2 million followers, many found themselves inspired by Ebert – including King Charles III, who ordered her a painting for Buckingham Palace.

Ebert had made a promise to herself that if she survived the Holocaust, she would educate the world to make sure something like it would never happen again.

And she did, writing a memory entitled “The Promise of Lily” and sharing her story with the world before she died at the age of 100 in October.

Including her story in the book “People of Judaism” keeps her memory alive, Forman said.

“Obvious is undoubtedly a massive loss, but it is known that it lives in so many people, and in these books, and that it inspires so much to live their lives in such amazing and positive ways,” Forman said. “To know that so many people do what they do because of my grandmother is so special to us as a family.

“I think every contributor who participated … It’s their story, it’s the whole book for them,” Schreiber added. “So wild – it’s really just significant.”

The people of Judaism

Stories like Ebert have become a way for Schreiber to deal with her grief. After her father passed, she decided to honor his memory starting with the account of Judaism people on Instagram, telling stories mourned and ultimately hope.

The release of Schreiber’s book coincided with the 10th anniversary of its social media site, and by chance, Tome also came when the Jewish community was suffering collective grief during a time when anti -Semitism levels had reached a high record in the midst of the continued warfare of the Israeli-Hamas.

“Time was pretty wild with what was happening in the Jewish world,” Schreiber said. “This was born of my personal grief, and here I stay again 10 years later in a grief of the personal community with everyone.”

With her great -grandson, Ebert wrote a memory entitled “The Promise of Lily” and shared her story with the world before she died at the age of 100.

Hand -selected Jewish stories range from celebrities and prominent people like Louis and Lillian Zabar, the founders of the world -famous Zabar market, to the survivors of the Holocaust as Ebert in everyday people with extraordinary stories. However, getting the book -specific fairy tales had little more purpose and consideration, “taking care of their families’ stories and precious history,” Schreiber said.

“This year was an interesting year,” she admitted. “On the one hand, you want to tell your stories; On the other hand, we are publishing information, names, such things – it has become a little more complicated this year, I will not pretend to do not. “

Louis and Lillian Zabar are the founders of the world -famous Zabar market, which still stands in the West 80th Street and Broadway.

Working in the book through and exceeding October 7, 2023, Hamas’ attacks on Gaza added another “significant” layer of purpose and meaning for its project.

“I really hope it provides readers with the same force that really kept me during a low point,” Schreiber said.

And the book seems to be bringing light to the darkness experienced by those of the Jewish community that can benefit the most, Schreiber said.

A nameless person presented in the book was sitting Shiva (Jewish mourning) with some families in his block and said Schreiber, “I read your book this weekend, and it just gave me such strength that I needed” .

Schreiber has used her Instagram page and now the book as a creative expression to bring hope to the world. She believes the book will tell the Jewish community that “you’re not alone”.

“I hope there is little strength just knowing that we are all dealing with.”

Many of the stories posed in the book are performances of regular people who show their advocacy.

“We all have our way to do something positive and significant to combat hatred and leadership with love, and everyone has it in their voice and style,” Schreiber explained. “It is such an important component because we cannot exist without the wonderful love we have from our friends, neighbors and supporters.

“It helps you see what people risk and what people do, and I think that’s such an important part of the way the world goes.”

Forman said to go through difficult times, it is important to “seek those community heroes, those people who have gone through in the past and who inspire us to continue to go today.”

“It’s not just about people who learn about sadness, but also inspiring how they can build a better life when such difficult periods go through and how things will improve because the world, especially now, now, It often looks so dark, “he continued. “But my grandmother always said that better times will come. Better days will come.”

And while the Instagram page of Judaism on Instagram is constantly sharing uplifting stories, it is sometimes useful to leave social media and remove screens-especially when hate comments seem to end, Schreiber suggested.

“Do this in the press, you have it proudly in your home,” she told the book, in time for Hanukkah. “I see him be the same as a family photo album. There is no my story is OUR story. ”
